Never Ever Dull
With every conversation, I always seem to end with "Never a dull moment"....our lives are rich, complex, and beautiful stories. Join me in laughing about everyday things and appreciating life-bumpy roads and all.
So, this Christmas season, I was ready. Really ready, I had all my shopping done, gifts wrapped in my favorite shabby chic look under the tree, stocking stuffers purchased, extra candies to fill in where the stocking stuffers didn't stuff, etc. Christmas Eve pj's good to go and hot chocolate mugs would be waiting for us soon when we returned from church. Then off to see the lights in our pj's-our traditions in place for the evening. I had the Christmas Eve tickets printed from our church, outfits for the kids ready, and supper made and on the table. An hour and a half before we needed to head out to the service, I called the kiddos to the dining room. That's when IT all started. IT went something like this: I looked at Child #3 and noticed that his face was pretty red and swollen. In fact, his eyes seemed small and downright beady because his face was so puffy. I asked him about this. A guy of few words said, "I don't know about that, but look at my stomach." He lifted up his shirt. Horror was all over my face. He had a rash. Big time. All over. Everywhere. I casually glanced at the clock 5:50 pm. Translation: All doctor's offices are now closed....It's Christmas Eve. Ugh. My oldest comments to my gang: "I knew things were going just too smoothly for us." I give her that loving motherly glare. The oldest calls around and finds one urgent care open. We have less than an hour to get over across town to see a doctor. Child #3 and I walk into the lobby and were quickly escorted to the patient rooms. Yes, he looked that bad. There was that look of "Oh, let's just get him back here so he doesn't contaminate any of us." look. We learn that Child #3 has a rash due to some viral condition and could possibly be mono. Just give him rest and fluids, wait and see. From there, IT took over because it was indeed viral. Like taking over-the-world viral. My next week made me re-consider my career. I could be a sports commentator as I reported to my family: Child #3 is good, but Child #1 is going down. Child #2 looked good for the first half but is slowing down in the recovery process. May not make the second half. Child #4 was good but is showing signs and may not come out of the locker room. My sweet family loves me. My sweet family loves my kids. However, you could see as IT took over and the plague made my family look like a set of dominoes toppling down one after the other, they were really ok with chatting over the phone, texting, and using Facetime. Who could blame them? It's really bad when on the last evening of our family get togethers, we took a picture of "The Survivors". I really had it together this Christmas. Honestly, I did. I even survived IT. For now, I'll pack away these memories and remember that once again we had a Christmas to remember.
